Discrimination Law

Discrimination Law refers to the body of laws that prohibit unfair or unequal treatment of individuals or groups based on certain protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. Key U.S. Laws

  1. Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII) – Prohibits discrimination in employment based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin.

  2. Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) – Protects individuals with disabilities from discrimination in employment, public accommodations, and government services.

  3. Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) – Protects workers aged 40 and older.

  4. Fair Housing Act – Prohibits housing discrimination.

  5. Equal Pay Act of 1963 – Requires equal pay for equal work regardless of gender.

Types of Discrimination

  • Direct Discrimination: Treating someone less favorably because of a protected characteristic.

  • Indirect Discrimination: A policy or practice that applies to everyone but disproportionately disadvantages a protected group.

  • Harassment: Unwanted conduct related to a protected characteristic that violates a person’s dignity or creates a hostile environment.

  • Victimization: Punishing someone for complaining about discrimination or supporting someone who did.
